Building a sensory-friendly home corner
June 24, 2026

A simple, low-cost setup for a calm spot anyone in the house can use.
You don't need a whole sensory room. A corner, a cushion and a quiet rule about who uses it can do most of the work.
The basics
- A soft seat at the floor — bean bag, doona on a rug, or a folded duvet.
- Lighting you control — a warm lamp instead of overheads.
- Texture choice — a knitted blanket, a smooth pillowcase, a weighted lap pad.
- One audio option — noise-cancelling headphones, or a small speaker with a familiar playlist.
- A simple boundary — a curtain, a folding screen, or even masking tape on the floor.
Make it everyone's
Sensory corners work best when they aren't "the kid's corner that means meltdown". Anyone tired or overwhelmed can use it — including you. That normalises the choice to retreat.
A few don'ts
- Don't fill it with too many toys.
- Don't put it near the laundry or the front door.
- Don't make it a punishment spot. The corner is a resource, not a consequence.
Iterate
Take a photo each fortnight. You'll be surprised how the corner naturally evolves with the person who uses it.
